How to unsubscribe from marketing emails in bulk
Filtering a newsletter out of sight does not stop it arriving. Getting off the list does, and the only reason people do not is that Gmail makes you do it one sender at a time.
One sender at a time, the Gmail way
- 1Open a marketing email. If the sender plays by the rules, Gmail shows an Unsubscribe link next to their address — click it and confirm.
- 2No link? Scroll to the bottom of the email and find theirs, which usually takes you to a preferences page.
- 3For the rest, search from:sender, select all, and delete — then build a filter so the next one skips the inbox.
- 4Repeat for every sender. A five-year-old mailbox typically has a few hundred.
Where it gets tiring. Filters are the trap. They hide the mail rather than stopping it, so your storage keeps filling and the sender keeps your address on the list. And doing it properly by hand is an afternoon's work that nobody ever finishes.

Questions people ask
- Will it delete anything I have read?
- No. Unopened only, and only mail older than a month. That rule is checked again on the server against each message's own labels and date before anything moves.
- Could it unsubscribe me from a colleague?
- No. Senders on your own organisation's domain are dropped from the list before you see it, and are never unsubscribed.
- Does it work in Outlook?
- Yes, with one difference: Outlook cannot count the pile before it clears it, so you see the senders rather than an exact number.
